The purpose of the Nebraska Dental Association (NDA) Peer Review process is to review matters concerning misunderstandings, inadequate communications, and serviceability between patients and their dentists. Peer Review is offered without cost to help with such problems if the dentist is a member of the Nebraska Dental Association. The object of Peer Review is not focused on which of the two parties is correct, but instead what will be required to resolve the disagreement.

Peer Review is not a court of law and has no disciplinary function. The procedure is neither adversarial nor punitive. It exists to educate, explore options, clarify and recommend a fair solution. Each district within the Nebraska Dental Association has a Peer Review committee and they consist of NDA member dentists who volunteer their time and expertise to consider questions about the quality of care, or about the fees charged in a given set of circumstances. The members of the committee will be impartial, and their services are available to those who participate in the process.

Criteria for case acceptance:

• The dentist must be an NDA member.
• The case must concern itself with Appropriateness of Treatment and/or Quality of Care.
• Receipt of request for mediation must be within two years of completion of treatment.
• Billing issues and/or fee disputes.

Cases not accepted for Mediation Review:

• Complaints against dentists who are not NDA members.
• Cases in litigation
• Dentist to dentist complaints
• Alleged fraud and other violations of the state dental practice acts
