Virginia
In April 2001, the Virginia Dental Health Foundation launched the Mission of Mercy ( MOM) Project. The Mission of Mercy Projects are conducted in identified, underserved areas of the state where there are not enough dental practitioners to adequately address the oral health needs of the community. O ver fifteen additional MOM projects have been hosted, in areas such as the Eastern Shore (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005); Wise County (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005); Northern Virginia (2002, 2004, 2005), Petersburg (2002, 2003, 2004), Grundy (2004, 2005) and Martinsville (2003). http://198.65.229.210/public/VDHF/VDHF.html

Texas
On November 2-4, 2001, at the Youth With a Mission headquarters in Garden Valley, (northwest of Tyler), the first-ever Texas Mission of Mercy (TMOM) provided free dental, eye, and medical care to uninsured and low-income adults and children. http://www.tda.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=200

Kansas
KMOM cofounders Dr. Jon Tilton and Dr. Jeff Stasch began in Garden City in 2003 with two clinics, then streamlined the program into one annual event that reaches some 2,000 patients in a different location each year. http://www.ksdentalfoundation.org/kmom/kmom.htm

Nebraska
Nebraskaheld its first NMOM in North Platte in 2005. Dr John Ahlschwede made it his 'mission' to have the Mission of Mercy start in Nebraska after his tenure as President of the Nebraska Dental Association was fulfilled.  Coupled with the vision of Dr Jim Jenkins and Dr Jim States the first NMOM was chaired by Dr States in North Platte in October of 2005.  900+ patients were seen in two days and with the help of Kansas (KMOM) individuals and equipment over $350,000 of free dental care was administered in those two days.  At that time NMOM had very little equipment of their own but were fortunate to have the expertise of Kansas folks such as Dr Jeff Stasch, Dr Jon Tilton, Dr Max MacReynolds, Executive Director Kevin Robertson of the Kansas Dental Association and others as well as the use of their equipment.

From that meager beginning some years ago the MOM idea spread to Texas, Kansas, then Nebraska, now Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa and Connecticut are having their first MOM's this year or in 2008.

It is very satisfying to see how dentists give of their time, talent energy and love for such a project.  All of their services are donated.  Many of them bring their office staff and personal office supplies to help make the event a great success. Each community has been great in providing expert assistance from Non-dental Volunteers who also give of their time talent and energy to help their neighbors and friends who may not be as fortunate as some.  Also each community has been very generous with donations of food, dollars, space to have the event and so much more.
